Largest ceramics exhibition in US museum

February 9, 2012
The biggest exhibition on Vietnamese ceramic products entitled “Dragon and lotus” is taking place at the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama, USA, from January 22 to April 8.

The exhibition is hosted by Donald Wood who is in charge of Asian arts and John Stevenson – a US leading expert in Asian arts.

On display are more than 200 ceramic products, including those dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries and a catalogue of collections and writings of Donald Wood, Stevenson and Phillippe Truong – an independent expert in Vietnamese ceramics.

Wood said the exhibition provides a good chance for American people to enjoy special works of art and gain a better understanding of Vietnamese history which plays an important role in the history and future of the US.

He added that there just are a few English publications on Vietnamese ceramics. Vietnamese people make the most sophisticated ceramic products in Southeast Asia. Although they have learned the art from China their products still bear their own stamp.

Having collected Vietnamese ceramic items since 1970, the Birmingham Museum of Art now has the biggest collection of Vietnamese ceramics in the US.
